Telegraph Gardenshop: Autumn crocus

Crocus speciosus

This attractive plant, which looks fabulous planted in grass, is my favourite of the autumn crocuses.

The goblet-shaped, light blue-mauve flowers open out to show delicate dark veining on the petals from September to November. The flowers are followed by narrow, mid-green leaves.

It is ideal for naturalising in a sunny border among deciduous shrubs, or for scattering through the lawn. Often the earliest autumn crocus to bloom, it increases to form large colonies.

The best time to plant is soon after it is harvested in late July and August. Plant bulbs in naturalistic drifts 4in deep in any well-drained soil, including chalk. Where bulbs are planted in grass, do not mow until after the leaves have died back.

Heavenly light

Can’t get enough of church conversions and this one is very special. A series of living spaces are positioned lightly within the historic building. Clean minimal lines allow the church’s structure to shine. The light spilling in through the ornate stained glass windows splashes the sparse modern interiors with rich colours. Furnishings are almost monastic but be sure they are luxurious at the same time. The soaring ceilings, the stonework, the open space! Imagine cranking up the stereo in a place like this. Heavenly bliss. And just when you think you have entered the heavenly light the flesh is pampered in a daring, dark overindulgence of a bathroom. Sinful?
