Preparing Your Home For Emergencies

The tornadoes that tore through Metro St. Louis on New Year’s Eve highlight how quickly our lives can be thrown into chaos.  Because this part of the MidWest is located at the confluence of two major rivers, we experience major weather upheavals all year long, which is why it is imperative that you are ready should disaster strike.

Plan for an Emergency

Your family might not be in one place when an emergency happens, so create a plan in advance about:

• How you will contact each other

• Plans for staying in the home

• Plans for where you will meet in case of evacuation

• Which family and friends (in- and out-of-town) will be contacted

• The location and contents of emergency kits

Prepare Emergency Kits

In advance, prepare one or more kits that will contain everything you need to tough out the hours and days after a disaster. The kit should be large enough to hold everything needed, and can be easily carried should you have to leave the home. Large plastic bins or trash cans with lids work well.

Ideally, you should plan for 3 days worth of food, water and supplies. The basic items that go into your kit include:

• 1 gallon of water per person per day

• Canned goods and a hand-operated can opener

• Dried foods such as fruit, nuts and pretzels in original store-bought packages

• Battery-powered radio

• Flashlight

• Extra batteries

• Candles with a lighter or waterproof matches

• All daily medications (prescription and over-the-counter)

• A first-aid kit

• Tissues and toilet paper

• Food and water for any pets that would be with you

Other non-essential items to consider would include items to occupy your time (such as books, magazines, deck of cards, notebook and pen), personal hygiene products (like toothpaste, soap and comb), blankets, rain gear, trash bags, and basic tools like a multifunctional knife and duct tape.

Pre-assembled emergency kits are available for about the same price to assemble your own, though being able to tailor a kit to your unique situation can be a comfort should there come a time it must be used.
