How Do You Discard Old Mattresses?
So finally, youre getting a new mattress! After agonizing over your old mattress and enduring the back pains its causing you, youve decided to replace this and bought yourself a new latex mattress. I know you cant wait to use it and sleep on it. But theres this very important matter you have to take care of that is, what are you going to do with the old mattress? How are you going to discard this?
Given that this mattress is more than ten years old and has been causing you sleep problems for the last few years, it would not be a good idea to consider this as a hand-me-down you can give to other members of your family. And because mattresses are big and bulky, its not something you can just throw away by the curb, or dump in the garbage bin. Besides, in many states, you can get fined for doing that.
This is one thing that most consumers do not really consider when buying a new mattress where are they dumping the old one? What must they do about this?
These days, there are plenty of green organizations that collect old, discarded mattresses and put this to good use by recycling it. You must have one in your local community, so check if you have a recycling facility.
Or you can try the local government. The department that takes care of sanitation in the city should be able to help you.
Or, better yet you can go online and enlist at Freecyle.Org and arrange to have your mattress collected.
Doing away with your old mattress is still part of your responsibility as a consumer.
